側面のグラデーションは月の満ち欠けを表しています。

Its behavior also suggests
"background transparency" in image processing
It also overlaps with a checkerboard pattern

I expressed this using a white and gray checkerboard pattern, the symbol for transparent backgrounds on modern PCs.
The gradient on the side represents the phases of the moon.
